Arctic & Antarctic Meteorology and Climatology

Recent changes in Antarctic ice-sheet surface temperatures appear enigmatic when compared with global average temperature trends. Although the Antarctic Peninsula is one of the most rapidly warming locations on Earth, weather stations on the Antarctic continent generally show insignificant trends in recent decades. However, all but two of the continuous records from weather stations are near the coast, providing little direct information on conditions in the continental interior. The widely used weather forecast reanalysis data are known to have errors owing to inconsistent assimilation skill in the satellite and pre-satellite eras.

Crises in Complex Socio-Economic Systems

In order to address the question, “how can complexity science support policy decision making?”, it seems to me that one needs first to embrace the larger question of what is driving a human being, a human groups or a human society. Only then can policy decision making identify and aim correctly its targets. My perception is that these questions can now be addressed with a fresh perspective, informed and inspired by science. Indeed, the scientific enterprise is now offering insights on many of the questions in social sciences that were before only the realm of normative approaches or philosophical discourses. Via novel experimental procedures, new technology and new conceptual insights, science can now help address from an evidence-based approach such questions as: what is happiness? What is driving human beings? Why do we cooperate?

Anthropic Cosmological Principle Revisited

Is there a peculiar specialness to our Universe with regard to the existence of intelligent life? Philosophers have long pondered whether or not the Universe is “fine tuned” to accommodate such conscious beings. This is, in the most general sense, what is known as The Anthropic Principle. It can be considered in direct contradiction to the Copernican Principle (or the Cosmological Principle) that postulates that man does not occupy a privileged position in the Universe.

The Time-arrow

The origin of the arrow of time is one of the greatest unsolved puzzles in philosophy, biology, physics and theology. More than a century ago Boltzman and the followers attempted to rationalize the asymmetry of the second law of thermodynamics – thermodynamic (cosmological) arrow of time. Its existence means that the system is not in the state of highest entropy. Since Ludwig Boltzman considerations,the casual, quantum, evolutionary, perceptual, ... arrows of time were investigated.
